Colours, Textures & Patterns (IDEATION)
Year 1, 2016
“Textures, Patterns and Colour” was really an eye-opener for me. Even though I had a slow and shaky start, I got right back on track, paying attention to every single detail around me, and also finding hidden yet interesting patterns in every nook and cranny. It has rekindled my curiosity about the objects and places around me.
Not only did I paid more attention to my surroundings, I also learned how different views can really affect the mood and message I intend to implement in my pictures. I find this assignment really enjoyable.
One of my strengths is experimenting with new ways to find an interesting shot. The picture of the indicator lights in the water filter is one example. By having a low shutter speed, I snapped the photo in a circular motion, which hence made the light looked bent. Therefore this is one of my strengths.
I learned that using only the same perspective may bore the viewer.
New and different angles can make the same subject interesting.

Architecture Photography
Year 1, 2016
"Bountiful Sails"
Location: Taken at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands
Time: 1:10 PM
Marina Bay Sands, without a doubt, has one of the most stunning architectures in Singapore. As such, people of the norm do not fail to admire its beauty. With its exuberant and rich environment, I took the opportunity to snap a shot of the shelter above me. By taking a low-angle shot, I was able to capture the gargantuan size of the structure and all of its details. The structure symbolizes that of the sails of a ship, infused with futuristic influences. Its unconventional curves in its structures achieve that symbolic trait.

"Solid Embrace"
Location: Taken at Bedok North Street 3 Block 533 (gazebo)
Time: 6:00 PM
This picture was taken on my way back home. I found that the gazebo’s architecture of its support beams intriguing and decided to take a photo of it. The support beams looked strong and defined. It is as though all of the support beams came to embrace each other in unity, holding the gazebo up to provide shelter. The small orange window panes that could be found hiding in between the support beams complement the colour of the gazebo, personifying the fiery spirit of man. This is definitely a sight where people would be oblivious to.

"The Wise Canopy"
Location: Taken at Bedok Reservoir Road Block 612 (carpark shelter)
Time: 5:10 PM
The word ‘bedok’ in Malay refers to a very large drum that was used for calling people to the mosque for prayers. As it is closely related to the Malay community, the carpark shelter closely features the roofs of traditional ‘kampongs’. Even though there are only a few people in Singapore residing in ‘kampongs’, there are many architectures of HDB flats which has traditional designs such as these. Ironically, these designs are common and people fail to realise and appreciate this local and traditional wonder. With that, I took a photo of this carpark shelter which was hiding amidst a block of HDB flats, with a new perspective.

"Work in Progress"
Location: Taken at Bedok North Flyover (over-head bridge)
Time: 5:49 PM
The architecture underneath the over-head bridge caught my attention. As I experimented on the angles for my shot, a low-angle shot captured more colours. This can be seen through the colour orange from the cones, giving off vibrancy to the photo. Grain-like textures can also be found on the ground. The cones and barriers emphasises the progression on the completion of the bridge.

"Sturdy Hope"
Location: Taken at Bedok North Flyover (over-head bridge)
Time: 5:43 PM
The Bedok North MRT Station is still in progress of development. This is some of the works being done. The MRT station will not be completed until next year, 2017. This construction looks half-completed. The pipes and metal bars are exposed, which displays pattern, texture, and detail. The name “Sturdy Hope” was given to this picture because hope is what people would hold on to if they were to use this bridge in its uncompleted state. The repetition of the metal pipes created the visual rhythm which is unusually pleasing to the eyes. Hence, I took a shot of this bridge.
